Friends of Yamuna Foundation (FoY)

The Friends of Yamuna (FoY) Foundation is dedicated to tackling the critical pollution levels affecting the air and water quality in Delhi, with a particular focus on the River Yamuna. We aim to raise public awareness and inspire actionable steps toward achieving clean water and clean air for a healthier environment.

Our Mission

A. Clean Yamuna

(FoY) is committed to fostering a collective responsibility for the protection and cleanliness of the River Yamuna. Our objectives include:

  • 1. Pledge Against Pollution: Inspiring individuals to make a personal commitment to avoid actions that contribute to Yamuna’s pollution.
  • 2. Awareness and Engagement: Motivating community involvement in combating river pollution and understanding the importance of this cause.
  • 3. Priority Shift: Shifting focus from short-term political motives to the long-term essentials of clean water and air.

B. Clean Environment

In addition to preserving the river, we work toward broader environmental restoration through:

  • 1. Plantation Initiatives: Promoting tree planting, especially along the Yamuna’s banks, to improve air quality and expand green spaces.
  • 2. Sustained Care: Ensuring the nurturing and upkeep of plants until they reach maturity.
  • 3. Air Quality Awareness: Encouraging personal and collective responsibility in reducing air pollution and guiding others to contribute.

C. Food for Birds

The Yamuna’s banks support a diverse bird population reliant on clean water and a steady food supply. FoY’s initiatives for bird conservation include:

  • 1. Feeding and Watering: Establishing provisions to feed birds and supply clean water, thereby supporting local biodiversity.
  • 2. Environmental Harmony: Cultivating an environment where people can enjoy the calming, melodious presence of birds along the Yamuna, enriching the experience of daily nature walks.

D. Yamuna Aarti

Acknowledging the Yamuna’s spiritual and life-sustaining role, we strive to establish a daily evening aarti on its banks. This ritual will:

  • 1. Honor the Yamuna: Recognize the river’s importance as a mother and vital life source.
  • 2. Create a Community Gathering: Offer a meaningful platform for collective prayers, community discussions, and serene reflection by the river, inspired by rituals in places like Varanasi, Haridwar, and Rishikesh.

Engagement and Collaboration

FoY seeks to unite diverse groups—including social and charitable organizations, schools, colleges, and people of all ages—to collaborate on these shared goals.

This structure clearly communicates FoY’s values, mission, and actionable plans while inviting broad community participation to create meaningful change.

Key points of Yamuna

The Yamuna River originates from the Yamunotri Glacier in the Himalayas at an elevation of 4,421 meters. The Yamuna River is 1,376 kilometers long. The Yamuna River flows through the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. The Yamuna's biggest tributary is the Tons River, which joins the Yamuna near Dehradun. The Chambal River is the Yamuna's biggest tributary on the right. The Yamuna joins the Ganges River near Prayagraj (Allahabad). The confluence of the two rivers is a sacred place for Hindus and is the site of annual festivals and the Kumbh Mela. The Taj Mahal is located on the southern bank of the Yamuna River. The Yamuna Biodiversity Park is a 457-acre nature reserve on the banks of the Yamuna River near Wazirabad village.
